BREAKING NEWS: Texas Tech Head Coach Joey McGuire Has Been Dismissed Amid Growing Pressure From Fans.

Texas Tech University has officially parted ways with head football coach Joey McGuire following growing unrest among fans and boosters over the program’s recent struggles. The decision, announced Monday morning, ends McGuire’s tenure after three seasons in Lubbock, where initial hope and momentum have gradually given way to frustration and disappointment.

McGuire was hired in 2021 with a reputation as a strong recruiter and a high-energy leader, following years of success at the high school and collegiate levels in Texas. He brought a renewed sense of excitement to the Red Raiders program, and his first season — highlighted by a winning record and a bowl victory — sparked optimism that Texas Tech was on the rise in the Big 12.

However, the progress many expected failed to materialize. Inconsistent performances, a lackluster offense, and repeated late-game collapses became the defining features of McGuire’s later campaigns. Despite a few upset wins, the team never seriously contended for a conference title under his leadership. Fans grew vocal, especially after back-to-back losing seasons and poor showings against in-state rivals.

Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt issued a statement expressing gratitude for McGuire’s contributions while acknowledging the need for change. “Coach McGuire brought passion and determination to our football program, and we thank him for his leadership,” Hocutt said. “Unfortunately, the results on the field haven’t met the expectations we set for Red Raider football. We believe this decision is in the best interest of our student-athletes and our future.”

Texas Tech now enters a crucial phase as it searches for a new head coach to lead the team into an evolving college football landscape. With the Big 12 undergoing major realignment and increased competition, the Red Raiders’ next hire will be expected to deliver immediate improvement and long-term stability. The university emphasized its commitment to winning and building a program that can compete for championships.

While McGuire’s tenure did not yield the success fans had hoped for, he leaves behind a roster with potential and a recruiting pipeline that could still bear fruit in the coming years.
