In a heartfelt full-circle moment, former Missouri Tigers quarterback and NFL veteran Drew Lock is returning to his alma mater. Just hours ago, the University of Missouri officially announced that Lock has been named the new Director of Player Development for the Tigers football program. The news sparked excitement across Columbia, as one of Mizzou’s most celebrated athletes takes on a new role focused on guiding the next generation of Tigers.

Drew Lock’s journey began at Missouri, where he made a lasting impact from 2015 to 2018. During his college career, Lock set multiple school and SEC records, including most touchdown passes in a single season. His leadership, arm strength, and unwavering confidence made him a fan favorite and solidified his place as one of the most prolific quarterbacks in program history. His return to the Tigers is both symbolic and strategic, bringing firsthand experience and a deep understanding of what it takes to succeed on and off the field.

After being drafted by the Denver Broncos in 2019 and spending several seasons in the NFL with both the Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks, Lock brings a wealth of professional experience to his new position. As Director of Player Development, he will mentor student-athletes on academic success, mental and emotional well-being, and life skills development, while also offering unique insight into the path from college football to the professional level.

Lock expressed deep gratitude and enthusiasm in a statement following the announcement. “Mizzou shaped who I am, and it’s always been home,” he said. “I’m honored to return and be part of the program in this new role. My mission is to support our players in becoming not just better athletes, but better men.” His words reflect a strong commitment to fostering growth beyond football a key element of the player development role.

Head coach Eliah Drinkwitz praised the move, calling Lock a “true Tiger” whose leadership and authenticity will make an immediate impact. “Drew’s been where these players are and where they want to go,” Drinkwitz said. “He understands the challenges and opportunities they face, and he’s ready to help them navigate both with integrity and wisdom.” The announcement is expected to boost team morale and strengthen alumni relations as well.
