Home Sweet Home: Just Hours Ago, Steve Slaton Makes Triumphant Return to West Virginia as Director of Player Development, Bringing NFL Experience and Leadership to His Alma Mater
In a move that has energized the West Virginia Mountaineers community, former standout running back Steve Slaton has returned to his alma mater as the Director of Player Development. This appointment marks a significant milestone in Slaton’s journey, transitioning from a key player to a pivotal leadership role within the team.
Slaton’s collegiate career at West Virginia from 2005 to 2007 was marked by exceptional performances. He rushed for 3,923 yards and 50 touchdowns, becoming the school’s all-time leader in total touchdowns (55) and points scored by a non-kicker (330). His dynamic partnership with quarterback Pat White led the Mountaineers to unprecedented success, including two Big East Conference championships and three consecutive bowl victories. Slaton’s standout performances earned him unanimous All-American honors in 2006 and a fourth-place finish in Heisman Trophy voting. His contributions were recently recognized with his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2025 .
Following his collegiate success, Slaton was selected in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. He made an immediate impact, rushing for over 1,200 yards in his rookie season. Slaton also had stints with the Miami Dolphins and the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League before retiring from professional football. Post-retirement, he pursued a career in the culinary arts, working as a personal chef and kitchen consultant in Houston .
In his new role at West Virginia, Slaton is poised to leverage his vast experience to mentor and develop current student-athletes. The Director of Player Development position focuses on guiding players in their personal growth, academic pursuits, and preparation for life beyond football. Slaton’s firsthand experience as both a college and professional athlete positions him uniquely to provide invaluable insights and support to the Mountaineers.
