Home Sweet Home: Just Hours Ago, Eddie George Makes Triumphant Return to Ohio State as Director of Player Development, Bringing NFL Experience and Leadership to His Alma Mater

In a move that has electrified Buckeye Nation, Ohio State University announced today that legendary running back and 1995 Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George is returning to his alma mater as the Director of Player Development for the football program. This appointment marks a significant milestone in George’s journey, transitioning from a standout player to a pivotal leadership role within the team.

George’s illustrious career at Ohio State from 1992 to 1995 was marked by exceptional performances, culminating in a senior season where he rushed for 1,927 yards and 24 touchdowns. His contributions earned him unanimous All-American honors and the prestigious Heisman Trophy. Following his collegiate success, George was selected 14th overall in the 1996 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers (now Tennessee Titans), where he enjoyed a nine-season career, amassing over 10,000 rushing yards and earning four Pro Bowl selections.

After retiring from professional football, George transitioned into coaching, taking the helm at Tennessee State University in 2021. Over four seasons, he led the Tigers to a 24–22 record, including a 9–3 season in 2024, earning a share of the Big South–Ohio Valley Conference championship and a berth in the NCAA Division I Football Championship. His coaching prowess was recognized with the Big South–OVC Coach of the Year award in 2024.

In his new role at Ohio State, George is poised to leverage his vast experience to mentor and develop current student-athletes. The Director of Player Development position focuses on guiding players in their personal growth, academic pursuits, and preparation for life beyond football. George’s firsthand experience as both a college and professional athlete positions him uniquely to provide invaluable insights and support to the Buckeyes.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day expressed enthusiasm about George’s return, stating, “Eddie’s journey exemplifies the values we instill in our program. His experiences and leadership will undoubtedly have a profound impact on our players.” George’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the program’s foundation and ensure sustained success in the coming seasons.
