Gunner Stockton, a native of Tiger, Georgia, has always dreamed of playing football for the University of Georgia. Growing up in a family of Bulldogs fans, including his grandfather who was a UGA alumnus and ticket holder, Stockton’s commitment to the team was deeply rooted in tradition and family pride. His father, Rob Stockton, played football at Georgia Southern, and his mother, Sherrie Stockton, played basketball at Erskine College, further emphasizing the family’s athletic background.

At Rabun County High School, Stockton’s talent was undeniable. He set state records in passing touchdowns, total passing and rushing touchdowns, and combined passing and rushing yards. His impressive high school career earned him the Gatorade Georgia Player of the Year award and a spot in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, making him a highly sought-after recruit.

The Role of the HOPE Scholarship

To attend the University of Georgia, Stockton received the HOPE Scholarship, a merit-based program funded entirely by revenue from the Georgia Lottery. Established in 1993, the HOPE Scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to Georgia residents pursuing higher education in Georgia. Since its inception, it has awarded over $14 billion to more than 2.1 million students, helping make college more affordable for Georgia residents.

Stockton’s College Career at UGA

Stockton enrolled at UGA in January 2022 and redshirted his first year. He became a member of the 2022 national championship team and made his collegiate debut in a win over the UT Martin Skyhawks. In the 2024 SEC Championship Game, Stockton replaced injured starter Carson Beck and led the Bulldogs to a 22–19 overtime victory over Texas. He continued to serve as the backup quarterback, contributing to the team’s success.
