BYU’s new Director of Athletics, Brian Santiago, shares insights into his role and vision for the future of BYU athletics…

Brian Santiago has officially taken the helm as Brigham Young University’s new Director of Athletics, ushering in a new era for Cougar sports. With nearly three decades of experience within BYU Athletics, Santiago’s appointment follows the retirement of long-serving AD Tom Holmoe. His deep-rooted connection to the university and its athletic programs positions him uniquely to lead BYU into its next chapter.
During his introductory press conference, Santiago emphasized his commitment to building upon BYU’s storied athletic legacy. He acknowledged the foundational work of his predecessors and expressed a desire to honor and expand upon their achievements. “I’m committed to carrying forward the legacy of greatness… and protect the great things that we’ve established together,” Santiago stated, highlighting his respect for the institution’s history and his vision for its future.
Santiago’s vision for BYU Athletics is both ambitious and forward-thinking. He aims to position BYU as a nationally relevant program that competes at the highest levels across all sports. Recognizing the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics, Santiago is focused on navigating challenges such as Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) regulations and revenue sharing models. He has committed to staying at the forefront of these developments to ensure BYU remains competitive and compliant.
Under Santiago’s leadership, BYU Athletics has already seen significant success. The football team exceeded expectations under head coach Kalani Sitake, and the men’s basketball program made a surprising Sweet 16 run in Kevin Young’s first year. Additionally, the cross country teams secured national championships, reflecting the department’s overall momentum. Santiago views these accomplishments not as isolated events but as indicators of BYU’s potential on the national stage.
Santiago’s approach is deeply rooted in the university’s mission and values. He emphasized the importance of aligning the athletic department with the broader objectives of BYU and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “Our athletic department is fully aligned with the mission of the university and the mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We‘re unashamed. It’s who we are, and we‘re going to stand with confidence in that,” he affirmed.
As BYU continues its journey in the Big 12 Conference, Santiago’s leadership will be pivotal in navigating the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
