Bears fans are celebrating a historic milestone as Head Coach Nicki Collen has signed a groundbreaking contract extension through the 2029–30 season. This extension solidifies Collen’s position as one of the most successful and highest-compensated coaches in women’s college basketball, reflecting her transformative impact on the program since her arrival in 2021.
In her first three seasons at Baylor, Collen has led the Bears to a 78–28 record, including three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. The 2023–24 season marked a high point, with the team achieving a 26–8 record and advancing to the Sweet 16. They also secured their 24th consecutive 20-win season, the second-longest active streak in Division I women’s basketball. Under Collen’s leadership, the Bears have consistently ranked among the nation’s top teams in key statistical categories, including three-point defense and assists per game.
Collen’s coaching prowess is evident in her ability to develop talent. She has mentored players who have earned All-Big 12 honors and national recognition. Notably, in the 2022 WNBA Draft, three of her players were selected, including NaLyssa Smith at No. 2 and Queen Egbo at No. 10, marking the first time Baylor had two top-10 picks in the same draft.
Beyond the court, Collen has embraced Baylor’s mission of preparing champions for life. Her commitment to the university’s values and her players’ holistic development has resonated throughout the Baylor community. In an open letter, Collen expressed her gratitude: “This extension is more than just a contract; it is a commitment… to encourage, mentor, and lead with integrity, compassion, and fearlessness.”
Athletic Director Mack Rhoades praised Collen’s contributions, stating, “Nicki has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to our student-athletes and the Baylor family… Her leadership, vision, and dedication to excellence have significantly contributed to the continued success of our storied program.”
