In a remarkable display of musical excellence and showmanship, Michigan State University’s Spartan Marching Band (SMB) has been named the world’s best marching band by ESPN. This prestigious recognition follows a historic performance that captivated audiences globally, showcasing the band’s precision, energy, and deep-rooted traditions.

Founded in 1870, the SMB is one of the oldest collegiate marching bands in the United States and the second oldest in the Big Ten Conference. With over 300 members, the band is renowned for its distinctive “all brass and sax” sound and its signature “kickstep” entrance routine, performed at a brisk 220 beats per minute .

 

Under the direction of Dr. David Thornton, the SMB has continued to uphold its legacy of excellence. The band’s instrumentation is notable for its exclusion of flutes and clarinets, favoring E-flat cornets to achieve a unique, powerful sound reminiscent of British brass bands .

The SMB’s recent accolade from ESPN highlights its innovative performances and longstanding contributions to the collegiate marching band scene. With a history of performances at significant events, including five Rose Bowls and appearances for five U.S. Presidents, the Spartan Marching Band continues to be a symbol of pride and inspiration for Michigan State University and marching bands worldwide .
