Top BYU Football Prospect Commits to Michigan State University: This will Strengthen The BYU 2025 Class

In a surprising development on the college football recruiting trail, four-star linebacker Jarcoby Hopson, previously a top target for the BYU Cougars, has committed to Michigan State University. Hopson, hailing from Lake Cormorant High School in Mississippi, is ranked as the No. 7 linebacker and the No. 56 overall prospect in the 2025 class, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

Hopson’s decision marks a significant win for Michigan State, as they successfully secured a commitment from a highly sought-after prospect from the Southeast, a region traditionally dominated by SEC programs. His commitment underscores the Spartans’ expanding recruiting reach under the current coaching regime.

For BYU, this development is a notable shift. While the Cougars have been assembling a strong 2025 recruiting class, Hopson’s commitment to Michigan State indicates the increasingly competitive nature of national recruiting battles. Despite this, BYU continues to bolster its roster with top talent. The Cougars’ 2025 class includes standout recruits such as running back McKay Madsen from Clovis North High School in California, who rushed for 1,238 yards and 19 touchdowns in his senior season, and tight end Jacob Nye from Melissa High School in Texas, who logged over 700 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns in 2024.

Michigan State’s acquisition of Hopson is part of a broader strategy to enhance their defensive lineup. The Spartans have also secured commitments from other notable prospects, including linebacker Charles White from Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Preparatory, who had an impressive junior season with 80 receptions for 1,164 yards and 18 touchdowns.

The commitment of Hopson to Michigan State highlights the dynamic and unpredictable nature of college football recruiting. As programs across the country vie for top talent, shifts like these underscore the importance of strategic recruiting and the ever-evolving landscape of college athletics.

While BYU may have missed out on Hopson, the Cougars’ robust recruiting efforts and the depth of their 2025 class suggest they remain well-positioned for future success. The competition for elite prospects continues to intensify, promising an exciting lead-up to the 2025 season for fans and programs alike.
