In a remarkable display of philanthropy, University of Georgia (UGA) head football coach Kirby Smart and his wife, Mary Beth, have pledged a generous $4.5 million to support various initiatives at their alma mater. This substantial contribution underscores their commitment to enhancing student-athlete experiences and advancing the university’s athletic programs.
A portion of the donation will endow UGA’s new social justice program, aiming to foster inclusivity and equity within the university community. Recognizing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Smarts have allocated funds to provide scholarships for senior student-athletes whose final seasons were impacted by the virus. This initiative seeks to alleviate financial burdens and ensure these athletes can complete their education and athletic careers.
The donation will also contribute to the renovation and expansion of the Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall, UGA’s football facility. Planned upgrades include an expanded weight room, additional locker rooms, enhanced sports medicine facilities, and improved meeting and coaching spaces.
This isn’t the first time the Smarts have demonstrated their dedication to UGA. In 2020, they committed $1 million to support similar initiatives, including social justice programs and scholarships for athletes affected by the pandemic. UGA President Jere W. Morehead expressed gratitude for the Smarts’ generosity, stating, “It is tremendously heartening to see former UGA student-athletes like Coach Smart and Mary Beth supporting today’s student-athletes.” He emphasized that their gift would address crucial extracurricular concerns vital to the success of student-athletes.
Through the Kirby Smart Family Foundation, established in 2016, the Smarts have previously donated over $1 million to more than 50 charities across Georgia, focusing on supporting children and families facing adversity.
