Exciting Announcement: Shawn Respert, Michigan State University’s all-time leading scorer and Hall of Famer, stuns fans by returning to college basketball as part of Tom Izzo’s coaching staff with the Spartans.

Michigan State basketball fans received a thrilling surprise as legendary Spartan Shawn Respert is set to return to his alma mater, joining Tom Izzo’s coaching staff. The program’s all-time leading scorer and Hall of Famer will bring his wealth of experience back to East Lansing, marking a new chapter in his basketball journey.

Respert, who starred for MSU from 1990 to 1995, is revered as one of the greatest players in program history. He scored 2,531 career points and was a consensus All-American before being selected in the first round of the 1995 NBA Draft. Though his professional career was cut short due to illness, Respert remained involved in the game, holding various coaching and player development roles at the NBA and collegiate levels.

“Shawn’s passion for the game and his deep connection to this program make him an incredible addition to our staff,” Izzo said in a statement. “He knows what it takes to succeed here, and I’m excited for our players to learn from him.”

Respert’s return reunites him with Izzo, who was an assistant coach during his playing days. His presence is expected to bring leadership, offensive expertise, and mentorship to the next generation of Spartans.
