TRANSFER UPDATE: Texas Quarterback Maalik Murphy Fully Commits to Duke Blue Devils, Choosing Them Over Kentucky and Alabama.

In a significant move within college football, former Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy has committed to the Duke Blue Devils, choosing them over other notable programs such as Kentucky and Alabama. This decision provides a pivotal boost to Duke’s football program under new head coach Manny Diaz.

Murphy, a redshirt sophomore, transferred from Texas after appearing in seven games and starting two during the 2023 season. In those appearances, he completed 40 of 71 passes for 477 yards, throwing three touchdowns and three interceptions. His performances included leading the Longhorns to victories over Kansas State and BYU.
At Duke, Murphy quickly established himself as a key player, winning the starting quarterback position over returning starter Grayson Loftis. Loftis, a sophomore, had filled in for the injured Riley Leonard in 2023, completing 91 of 163 passes for 1,006 yards, with eight touchdowns and four interceptions.
Murphy’s decision to join Duke comes amid significant changes for the Blue Devils, including the departure of former head coach Mike Elko to Texas A&M and quarterback Riley Leonard transferring to Notre Dame. Murphy’s commitment offers stability and promise to Duke’s offense as they prepare for the upcoming season.

The Blue Devils are set to kick off their season against Elon on August 30, with Murphy leading the offense. His arrival is anticipated to invigorate Duke’s performance in the Atlantic Coast Conference, where they were picked 11th out of 17 teams in the 2024 preseason media poll.
