JUST IN: Major Setback As Oklahoma Sooners Loses Another Top-Notch Linebacker To The Transfer Portal Just 48 Hours After Getting His…

The Oklahoma Sooners’ football program has encountered a significant challenge with the recent departure of linebacker Lewis Carter, who entered the transfer portal on December 29, 2024. Carter, a sophomore from Tampa, Florida, participated in 12 of the team’s 13 games during the 2024 season, recording 21 tackles, including two tackles for loss, along with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Carter’s decision to transfer follows closely on the heels of fellow linebacker Dasan McCullough’s entry into the portal on December 10, 2024. McCullough, who transferred to Oklahoma from Indiana prior to the 2023 season, battled injuries but managed to appear in 10 games in 2023 and seven games in 2024, starting five. He accumulated 17 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss during his time with the Sooners.

These departures are part of a broader trend, with Oklahoma experiencing a total of 26 players entering the transfer portal during this cycle, including three linebackers: Carter, McCullough, and redshirt freshman Phil Picciotti. Picciotti, a highly regarded recruit from Pennsylvania who played his senior year at IMG Academy in Florida, did not appear in any games for the Sooners over two seasons before deciding to transfer.

The loss of these linebackers presents a considerable challenge for the Sooners’ defense, especially with the anticipated departure of standout linebacker Danny Stutsman to the NFL Draft. The coaching staff will need to reassess and reinforce the linebacker unit to maintain defensive stability in the upcoming season.
